Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders

|
|
|
Inattention (At least 6 for 6 months which is maladaptive and not consistent with developmental level)
- Often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes.
- Often has difficulty sustaining attention.
- Often does not listen.
- Often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish school work, chores, duties.
- Often has difficulties organizing tasks and activities.
- Often avoids or strongly dislikes tasks that require sustained mental effort.
- Often loses things necessary for tasks for activities (school assignments, pencils, books, tools).
- Often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli.
- Often forgetful in daily activities.
Hyperactivity-Impulsivity (at least 6 for 6 months and maladaptive)
HYPERACTIVITY
- Often fidgets with hands and feet or squirms.
- Often leaves seat in classroom or in other situations in which expected to remain seated.
- Often runs about or climbs excessively where inappropriate (in adults, adolescents-limited to restless feelings).
- Often has difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly.
- Often on the go and acts like driven by a motor.
- Often talks excessively.
Impulsivity
- Often blurts out answers.
- Often has difficulty awaiting turn.
- Often interrupts or intrudes on others.
Combined (6 symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity persistent for 6 months)
- Some symptoms present before age 7.
- Symptoms present in two or more situations.
- Cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, academic, or occupational functions.
- Not exclusively during PDD, psychotic disorders, and not accounted for by mood disorders, anxiety, stress, adjustment, personality disorders, school problems, and cultural and socio-economic differences.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder
- Loses temper.
- Argues with adults.
- Actively defies or refuses adult requests.
- Deliberately does things that annoy other people.
- Blames others for mistakes.
- Touchy, easily annoyed.
- Angry, resentful.
- Spiteful and vindictive.
